Over six months, we tested 14 vacuum cleaners across carpet, hardwood, and tile — dragging in cat litter, coffee grounds, crushed crackers, and actual dirt from the garden. Here’s what actually works.

Best Cordless Vacuum: Dyson V15 Detect

The Dyson V15 Detect is the best cordless vacuum we’ve ever tested, and it’s not close. The 240 AW suction outperforms most plug-in vacuums we tested. The green laser mounted in the cleaning head reveals fine dust on hard floors that looks completely clean to the eye — once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

The built-in piezo sensor counts and categorizes particles by size as you vacuum, displaying the data on the LCD screen in real time. It’s genuinely useful: you can see when a section of carpet is actually clean versus when there’s still fine debris the laser isn’t showing.

The catch: The V15 is heavy at 6.8 pounds. Overhead vacuuming or extended stair sessions are fatiguing. If weight is a concern, the V12 Detect Slim is worth considering, though it sacrifices battery life and suction.

Dyson V15 Detect Absolute Cordless Vacuum

The most powerful cordless vacuum we've ever tested. The built-in laser reveals dust invisible to the naked eye, and the particle counter shows you exactly what you're picking up in real time.

Best Robot Vacuum: iRobot Roomba j7+

Robot vacuums have come a long way, but the j7+ is the first one we’ve tested that we’d confidently recommend to a home with pets or kids. The front-facing camera doesn’t just map your home — it identifies specific objects in its path, like socks, phone cables, and pet waste, and routes around them.

iRobot backs the pet waste avoidance with their “P.O.O.P.” guarantee: if the Roomba j7+ doesn’t avoid a pet accident, iRobot replaces the robot for free. We didn’t need to test that guarantee, but we appreciated the confidence.

The self-emptying base is the real quality-of-life upgrade. The Clean Base holds up to 60 days of debris — you set a schedule and mostly forget the vacuum exists. For homes under 2,000 square feet, the j7+ handles maintenance cleaning almost completely autonomously once the home map is finalized.

iRobot Roomba j7+ Self-Emptying Robot Vacuum

The smartest robot vacuum we've tested. The j7+ learns your home layout over time, avoids pet waste and socks (iRobot's Pet Owner Official Promise), and empties itself into the base station for up to 60 days.
