We tested 14 baby monitors across two months — in small apartments, large houses, and everything in between. We evaluated video clarity, connection reliability, night vision quality, two-way audio, and whether the accompanying app actually works when you need it to. These are the monitors worth buying.

Best Overall: Nanit Pro Complete Baby Monitor System

The Nanit Pro is the baby monitor we’d recommend to most parents. The overhead camera angle gives you a clear, unobstructed view of the entire crib — no more repositioning when your baby rolls to the edge. The HD video is sharp enough to see chest movement without zooming, and the night vision transitions automatically without any purple tint or image distortion.

The sleep tracking is the feature that sets Nanit apart. Using computer vision (no wearable required), it tracks time asleep, number of awakenings, and sleep efficiency — and shows you trends over weeks and months. New parents argue about whether the baby is “sleeping better” — the Nanit ends that argument with data.

The two-way audio is clear in both directions, and the built-in night light has a warm, dimmable glow that won’t disturb sleep during late-night check-ins. The wall-mount bracket keeps the camera securely positioned without wobbling, and setup takes about ten minutes.

The catch: Full sleep insights require a Nanit membership ($99/year for one child). The video feed and basic monitoring work without a subscription, but you’ll miss the analytics that make Nanit genuinely useful as a sleep coaching tool.

Who it’s for: Parents who want more than just a camera — sleep data, trends, and the confidence that comes from knowing exactly how your baby is sleeping. Also an excellent gift for a baby shower.

How We Tested

Each monitor was tested over a minimum of four weeks in a real home environment. We evaluated video quality in both daylight and low light, connection stability across different home Wi-Fi setups, audio clarity at various distances, battery life for portable models, and the usability of companion apps on both iOS and Android.

What to Look For

Camera angle: Overhead or wide-angle mounts give you the full crib view. Pan-and-tilt cameras offer flexibility but introduce a moving part that can fail. For most cribs, a fixed overhead mount is the more reliable choice.

Connection type: Wi-Fi monitors stream to your phone from anywhere with internet. Dedicated radio monitors (non-Wi-Fi) work without a router and are harder to hack, but you can only view the feed at home. For most parents, Wi-Fi is the right call.

Night vision quality: True infrared night vision produces a clear black-and-white image. Avoid monitors that use a visible red light to illuminate the room — it’s disruptive to sleep. The best monitors switch modes automatically.

Two-way audio: The ability to speak through the monitor is underrated. Being able to shush or hum to a stirring baby from another room can prevent a partial awakening from becoming a full wake-up — which makes a real difference at 3am.
